Its territory was and is the Montana portion of Yellowstone National Park. Its total area is , with of land and of water. Its status as a county-equivalent was dissolved in 1978, (although the Census Bureau neglected to notice the dissolution until 1997 ) and its territory apportioned between its two adjacent counties within Montana: Gallatin County and Park County. Gallatin County received of land area and of water area, whereas Park County received of land area and of water area. The geographies transferred are now designated by the United States Census Bureau as Census Tract 14 in Gallatin County, and as Census Tract 6 in Park County. Its status as part of Yellowstone National Park, however, has not been changed through this transfer. In the 1990 census, the last one before the Census Bureau learned of the transfer, the territory had a population of 52 persons.
